Peterborough Lift Lock #21

Peterborough Lift lock With the successful mechanical consult behind us, we moved through lock 20 just around the corner from the Peterborough Marina, and continued another mile to the Lift Lock. We had planned to bike to the lift lock and spend some time at the visitor’s center, but with our departure coming […]

July 14-16 Toronto, ON

Allan H. Treman State Marine Park

“Traveling will destroy the person you use to be to help create whomever you were meant to become.” —Kiana Azizian

We spent two wonders nights at the Marriott in downtown Toronto. It was great to have such a wonderful room to come back to each evening after walking all over town exploring the unique neighborhoods. We walked over twelve miles on Saturday. Friday afternoon we explored Chinatown and the Kensington Market neighborhoods. Kensington Market is Toronto’s most vibrant and diverse neighborhood located in the heart of town. It’s full of eclectic shops and cafes. The neighborhood has always been home to immigrants…the nationalities have changed over the past century, making it one of Toronto’s most multicultural neighborhoods.

[KensBlog] 2017-02 Dent Island to Port McNeil

Greetings all! Roberta and I have started our 2017 cruising season! After a week of spoiling ourselves at Dent Island Lodge (sleeping on the boat but enjoying the resort’s great service and amenities) we started plotting our route to reach the Broughton Islands, near the tip of Vancouver Island, approximately 300 miles south of Ketchikan Alaska. Plotting Our Course I mentioned in my last blog entry that Dent Island is surrounded by rapids. Water flow through these islands happens as th…

Ithaca Farmers Market

Allan H. Treman State Marine Park

“The trouble with life isn’t that there is no answer, it’s that there are so many answers.” —Ruth Benedict

Ithaca has a wonderful farmers market…it occurs three times a week during the summer. The Ithaca Farmer’s Market is a cooperative with 160 vendors who live within 30 miles of Ithaca and grow or make their own products, offering a true taste of the region’s rich beauty and heritage through homegrown goods, produce, handmade crafts and gifts. The market opened in 1973 and the pavilion is situated in a garden-like setting, surrounded by trees and flowering plants.

Mizen Head

The Mizen Head Signal Station was built in 1909 to sound a fog signal warning ships away from the dangerous headland at the southwest tip of Ireland. The signal station sits on the tip of the peninsula (far left on the photo above), cutoff from the mainland by a deep chasm, with a bridge spanning…

Hastings – Lock 18

From Cambellford we traveled to lock 18, and decided to stay for an additional day to stay put for the weekend traffic, as well as take in the flotilla of classic boats that was scheduled for the weekend. We enjoyed some pleasant weather for a change, with some actual sunshine! Hastings is a small town, […]

Knock, knock…

Somebody’s home.  We have occasion to visit with folks we meet along the way, sometimes we have a knock on the boat as folks pass by just to say hello. We’ve been getting a lot of “what kind of boat is this?…” comments up here in the hinterlands because well, a heavy blue water capable […]

Frankford to Campbellford

Flight lock 11 & 12 Ranney Falls     Campbellford municipal canal wall Our second day began with a 10 AM start from Frankford. The route follows the river, so it’s fairly wide, and depth is good. There are areas with some current and the entire run is going upriver, so we’re bucking […]
