Blind Channel

It’s another early morning departure as we continue working our way south along the Inside Passage. Today we have several rapids to transit. It’s critical that we arrive to Green Point Rapids at slack tide. This rapid has currents up to 7 knots with whirlpools and over falls. By arriving at slack, we can avoid […]

Crossing Cape Caution 2022

We would like to stay longer at Khutze Bay, but we still have many miles to travel so must push on. Continuing south on the Princess Royal Channel, we enjoy a beautiful day with 70 degree temperatures and bright sunshine. Our anchorage for the next two days is Bottleneck Inlet. We rendezvous here with our […]

Crossing Dixon Entrance 2022

It’s an early 5 AM departure from Foggy Bay for our first open water crossing of our inside passage trip. This body of water is know as Dixon Entrance and is notorious for its rough water. In the past we have waited up to a week for a calm water crossing but toady we have […]

The Inside Passage South 2022: Wrangell to Foggy Bay

Today we continue our transit south on the Inside Passage. Our final destination will be Sidney, British Columbia about 800 miles away. We plan on spending about a month exploring the many anchorages and small towns along the route. This will be our fourth time transiting the Inside Passage. We are usually in a hurry […]

Wrangell Narrows

Leaving Petersburg, we are heading south today thru the Wrangell Narrows. This 21 mile long passage connects Frederick Sound to Sumner Strait. It is a busy waterway with almost all South East Alaska traffic passing thru these narrows. The 400 foot long Alaska Ferries and barges use this route. Meeting some of the big guys […]

Hike to Swan Lake

If you have followed our blog, you know that Thomas Bay is one of our favorite anchorages. One attraction to this anchorage for us is the ability to hike on the Cascades Creek trail. We have hiked parts of the difficult trail but have never made it to Swan Lake about 10 miles away. So […]

Exploring Frederick Sound 2022

After a sleepless night in Farragut Bay due to high winds, we are happy to get underway this morning. Cruising down Frederick Sound, we spot several whale spouts. This area is world renown for its large concentration of Humpback Whales during the summer months. Today we spot only a few. It is still early in […]

Farragut Bay

Jeff is out at 7 AM this morning to collect our crab traps as it is time to say goodbye to Ideal Cove and explore some more areas of South East Alaska. The anchorage is again productive with another six nice size crabs. It is a beautiful morning as we exit the anchorage and enter […]

Ideal Cove Part Two

While in town for the Little Norway Festival, we take some time to catch up on maintenance of Idyll Time. We had a diver come and change out our zincs and also check out the paint condition on the hull. It past years Jeff has dove the boat but this year it just seemed easier […]

Little Norway Festival

Idyll Time’s home port of Petersburg, Alaska is known as Little Norway. The town was settled by Norwegian Peter Buschmann in 1897 and still retains it’s Norwegian heritage. The Little Norway Festival celebrates Syttenede Mai, the signing of Norways constitution on May 17th, 1814. This four day event is Petersburgs biggest festival of the year. […]
